Finally. After watching two of my favorite comic book movies of all time, I've been eagerly anticipating the conclusion to one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Ahh yes, after the shockingly realistic portrayal of the creation of Batman in "Begins", to the utterly impeccable performance by Heath in "The Dark Knight", "The Dark Knight Rises" couldn't have much higher expectations. Even in New York City, IMAX theaters had tickets sold out months before its final release. But after the arguably disappointing "Inception", my fears brought into question, would "The Dark Knight Rises" turn out like "Godfather Part III"? I could proudly say it doesn't, but not without its fair share of problems all due to Nolan's continuous advancement towards blockbuster-ized movie making.To compare "The Dark Knight Rises" to its predecessor, "The Dark Knight" is extremely difficult. "The Dark Knight was a crime-drama epic, focused on delivering gritty realism and psychological tension at its finest; "The Dark Knight Rises" is fixated to be an emotional, character-building war-epic, built on desecrating everything we've come to know, physically. As a whole, "Rises" is a very different film compared to its predecessor. "Rises", much like its previous installments, has an interesting narrative, but simply fails to completely immerse viewers into the emotional turmoil and pain many of the characters are experiencing. It's blatantly obvious that its intention was to strive for dramatic storytelling, but unfortunately, much like "Saving Private Ryan", the characters' emotional pain is not the most riveting story arc -- it's the havoc that's being done on a wide scale. Yes, there are some heart wrenching moments like one specific dialogue scene between Michael Caine's character, Alfred, and Bruce Wayne, and the failure Batman faces, but as a whole, the tale of Bruce Wayne doesn't stir enough emotion to make it truly a memorable emotional epic. "Rises"'s problems don't end there. As Christopher Nolan fully embraces Hollywood big-budget blockbusters, he also begins to compromise and accept conventional filmmaking and aggravating techniques. Hey, Hans Zimmer's a boss composer; his score's gripping, but it's blaring throughout the entire movie -- in the explosive action, emotional dialogue scenes, flashbacks, you name it. This same frustrating problem's found in "Inception", my least favorite Nolan film. And when the music is playing throughout the entirety of the movie, the score no longer intricately has a revealing impact on critical scenes; the power of music becomes limited. Editing is a strange art to describe, but it's easy to pinpoint and see that throughout the entire film, the editing meanders all over the place, making dynamic scenes less powerful than they should be; it gives off a, somewhat, airy vibe. It's not a new problem at all; this persistent problem was found in post-"The Prestige" films, but wasn't as dominant in "The Dark Knight". But the most hindering aspect of "Rises" lies in the last 30 minutes. Instead of playing off of its, somewhat, distinctive story arcs, "Rises" begins to fall back on conventional storytelling near the end, even retreating back to cheap plot devices like misleading twists and turns. C'mon, I thought you were better than that Nolan. Nevertheless, it was a good ending, but not as memorable as "The Dark Knight"'s finale, or even "Batman Begins"'s. Still, it's commendable to notice that the pacing doesn't pause once throughout its lengthy 2 hours and 45 minute running time; that in itself shows the incredibly deft craftsmanship Nolan has under his hands.Seems like I'm bashing away, but there's a lot of good here to be found. Christian Bale gives his best performance as Bruce Wayne and it shows. His emotions are raw and real, exuding through even the obscuring mask of Batman. The same goes with Tom Hardy's performance as Bane, though not as eccentric as the late Heath Ledger -- hell, the entire cast is a win, but what certainly stole the show for me was Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Expectations were low and with a character that is simply characterized as a deceptive heroine or villain, it didn't seem too interesting in the first place. Boy, did she prove me wrong. Every scene she was in, she stole the show, dragging me around and seductively wooing me into her lies. Though the writing wasn't as sharp and didactic as previous iterations of the Batman franchise, "Rises" still manages to deliver mature and engaging dialogue. Cinematography is all-around gorgeous, consistently drawing similarities to Kubrick's style of camerawork. Regardless, a problematic issue I've consistently found throughout all of Nolan's films since "Batman Begins" was how Nolan seemingly uses incorrect types of explosives/effects for on-screen actions. For instance, remember the memorable truck scene in "The Dark Knight" involving the Joker, donning the RPG at hand and firing at cop cars? Didn't look like an RPG explosion to me -- more like a charge planted on the side of a cop car, unfit to match the ferocious power of a rocket. Same goes here in "Rises"; sub-machines are shot along computer screens, cannons are shot at Tumblers, and explosives are set off with a lack of a pow, withdrawing me back from the experience and giving me a rude awakening that this is a movie, not a thematic, immersive experience. I commend Nolan for going old school and using real explosives and practical techniques instead of using CGI, but make it cohesive at least. "Rises" has its problems. It does seem like a rant on my part, but it's only because of my high expectations and praise for one of the most compelling universes put to film. "Rises" is not a bad movie at all -- in fact, it's awesome. The action's in your face and compelling; the narrative sucks you in and never lets go through its entire runtime, and the performances are absolutely stellar. Regardless, because Nolan has decided to lean towards Hollywood's style of filmmaking, "Rises" ends up regurgitating a lot of conventional and broodingly annoying techniques that mainstream Hollywood movies has adapted into their films. Nolan, you did a great job with a fantastic narrative, but please, turn back; go back to your roots! As for the movie, what a stylish finale to one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time. I'm gonna miss you Batman. You delivered the best and most fitting comic book movie I've always dreamed of seeing and experiencing.

It was the tip of the nose that did it, and not just for me. The wife of Democratic New York Governor Eliot Spitzer stood by his side on 12 March 2008, as he attempted to salvage his reputation by resigning from office. Looking rent to the core of her frail and neatly suited being, she stood quietly as her sexual allure was effectively trashed by her own husband before millions of viewers. Pale but keeping it together with what must have taken an iron will, it was just the tip of her nose that give away how utterly humiliated, dejected and betrayed she felt.

So poignant was the picture, it inspired the television law drama series The Good Wife (2009) which replayed that interview with a cathartic reprise. She smacks him one out of sight of the cameras and didn't it feel good. Men like Spitzer make us collectively angry. He not only abused public funds - some $80,000 - to pay exhorbitant escort fees, he caused distress to the very people he is charged with protecting from the slings and arrows of life, etc.?

Yet the Spitzer story was somehow different to the Clintons and a blur of public figures whose unfaithful marriages have undergone the same?flayed-alive,?overexposure. Sometimes it takes a critical mass to disperse the fog of unquestioning. I saw the carcass of the Spitzer marriage being flung atop a mass of corpses too high to see over. I needed to step back to get perspective, and once I did I saw a heap that, like most heaps, looked like a monumental waste.

It's no surprise Sptizer?s call-girl has done very nicely for herself, with a Playboy shoot, a single release and a sex-advice column in the New York Post. Spitzer's wife, Silda Wall, has also capitalized on the media attention, releasing a book,??Rough Justice: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer?. She has said, 'The wife is supposed to take care of the sex. This is?my?failing; I wasn't adequate.'

Bettina Arndt would agree. It is men who suffer a 'sex-starved' subsistence in heterosexual monogamous marriage. Women deprive men, women dismiss men, women shame men about their natural urges. Women are, all over again, Female Eunuchs and God's Police.?Whatever sexuality we managed to reclaim during the sexual revolution, we are now content to consign to history and worse, impose our desultory, lack-lustre, bed-death on the men we love.?

Eric Anderson also discerns a gender abyss between men and women's sexual needs in his recently released book,??The Monogamy Gap: Men, Love, and the Reality of Cheating?. This study of 120 partnered undergraduate men found that 78% cheated, and unlike Arndt who attributes men's infidelity to sexual neglect, Anderson blithely puts it down to men wanting to have sex with other women. He and Ardnt advocate rethinking monogamy, and I agree.?

It may just be the surveillance and exposure of our once private lives that has brought us to this point of realisation, but monogamy clearly isn't working and in the end it's kids who are getting most hurt by the trashing of perfectly functional relationships all because we have lazily failed to pay attention to the self-evident ? sexual exclusivity is a cruel and repressive ideal few attain. Long term monogamous sexual relationships at some point lose ignition. Most soldier on without it, but a critical mass can't live without it. Rather than hurt the partners they love, and destabilise their kids, they lie.

Increasingly the absurdity of the institution, its inherent sexual repressiveness, is being questioned. What concerns me is this nasty turn toward correlating monogamy with women's sexuality, as though it suits us because we have lesser, read?deficient, read inferior needs.

By all means let's rethink monogamy, but why that entails blaming women for the failings of an institution that arguably hasn't left us overly sated and all-over-rosy either, isn't clear. Aside from entrenched, habitual misogyny, it is hard to explain why the voices of women are either missing or stereotyped in the debate to date.

Arndt has so alienated women over decades of overexposure in male-appointed editorial column space I'm astonished any have contributed to her 'research'. I for one refuse to have another Saturday morning trampled by her myopic ravings and haven't read a word she's written in over ten years, anymore than I would listen to Alan Jones, or watch Andrew Bolt.?Certain men, who may not have taken ?Gender, Sexuality and Feminism? in their undergraduate years at a guess, will flock to her website seeking solace, making her sample self-selected. I wonder if any have ever asked themselves what they might do better to make their wives want them again ? Cut their nails? Brush their teeth? Read the kids a story? Make eye contact? Instead it is all about women?s lack of testosterone.

It's easy to blame, and harder to think with rigour on a question that does indeed cause untold numbers of men AND WOMEN real distress, either because a central part of their well-being is daily undermined by living unsated, or because their entire lives, their emotional and financial security, things they have worked most of their adult lives to build, and that of their children, has been thrown asunder on the tissue-thin premise of sexual possession and its betrayal.

The keystone of the institution of monogamy is sexual possession. Its origins lie in the securing of agnatic bloodlines for property inheritance. Over centuries it has cast a long shadow disproportionately over women's lives because we are the only ones in the reproductive dyad who can prove with certainty our children?s parentage. The Father could be anyone, and nothing cuts deeper for men, as it would for women. It has made them a little insecure about women?s sexuality and that?s putting it mildly. It is thus women who have endured real suffering Bettina, such as violence, incarceration, lobotomies, impoverishment and social stigma.?Indeed the body count for adulterous women over the centuries and the horrific state of many of their corpses is testament enough to the gender asymmetry in heterosexual monogamous marriage.

Sexual possession has no place in modern relationships or familial configurations. It is like religion. For some, for a time, it provides an ideal to live up to that gives structure and purpose. To have mutual satisfaction over a lifetime with the person you love is not just ecstatic, it is a triumph given all the impediments to good sex a couple can face. But for monogamist fundamentalists, sexual possession provides the rationale for violence against women and children. The children of monogamist fundamentalists face a clear and present danger when their mothers repartner; in two recent cases, of being left to drown at the bottom of a dam, or of catapulting to their death off the Westgate Bridge.

There is much at stake here, and we have reached a critical moment in this nascent debate. Let's not squander the opportunity to create better relationships, and perhaps defuse one highly volatile fuse for violence against women and children, by letting gender bias and misogyny creep into the discussion.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ziegler has recused herself in the matter involving her colleague Justice Prosser:

Before Annette Kingsland Ziegler, J.

??1?? This matter is highly unique and presents extraordinary facts and legal circumstances.? On June 25, 2012, Justice David T. Prosser, through his attorney, requested that I disqualify or recuse myself from the above-referenced matter, asserting that I am a material witness who was present at the February 10, 2010, and June 13, 2011, events that are the subject of the complaint.? Justice Prosser has made essentially the same request of each of his six colleagues on the supreme court.? In State v. Henley, 2011 WI 67, ?2, 338 Wis.?2d?610, 802 N.W.2d?175, this court concluded that "determining whether to recuse is the sole responsibility of the individual justice for whom disqualification from participation is sought."? Accordingly, this decision addresses my individual position on my recusal or disqualification.? Nonetheless, each justice is presented with a similar fundamental issue.

?2?? The highly unusual issue each justice is called upon to decide is whether he or she, being a material witness to or co-actor in an alleged altercation between two colleagues, may sit in judgment of one or both of the justices involved in the alleged altercation?? The answer to that issue, for me, is an ineluctable "no."

?3?? First and foremost, my conclusion is dictated by the law on judicial ethics.? Pursuant to Wis. Stat. ??757.19(2)(b) (2009-10), "[a]ny judge," including a supreme court justice, "shall disqualify himself or herself from any civil?.?.?.?action or proceeding when one of the following situation occurs?.?.?.?(b) When a judge is a party or a material witness?.?.?.?."? That rule is echoed by SCR 60.04(4)(e)4. of our Code of Judicial Conduct, which provides that a judge "shall recuse himself or herself in a proceeding when the facts and circumstances the judge knows or reasonably should know establish one of the following?.?.?.?(e) The judge?.?.?.?4. Is to the judge's knowledge likely to be a material witness in the proceeding." Likewise, SCR 60.04(4)(a) directs that a judge shall recuse himself or herself in a proceeding when the judge has "personal knowledge of disputed evidentiary facts concerning the proceeding."? Again, the law leads me to the irrefutable conclusion that I must disqualify or recuse myself from the above-referenced matter

?4?? My conclusion is also in accordance with the principles of fundamental fairness and the right to a fair and impartial decision-maker, a right that precludes a judge from prejudging a case.[6]? In our country and in our state, everyone, even a supreme court justice, is entitled to a fair tribunal.? Indeed, both the United States Constitution and the Wisconsin Constitution guarantee equal protection under the law.? U.S. Const. amend. XIV, ??1; Wis. Const. art. 1, ??1.? Under the highly unusual factual situation in the instant case, each justice is in the position to have already formed conclusions regarding the nature of the events that occurred on February 10, 2010, June 13, 2011, and prior thereto.? That is, each justice, as a witness, has his or her own perspective on what occurred on February 10, 2010, and June 13, 2011.? As far as I am concerned, there is simply no way for me to separate my personal perceptions and fairly and impartially judge this matter.? Because, at a minimum, the justices are witnesses and all justices are likely to be called as material witnesses in the proceeding, recusal is required.? Frankly, there is no need for a three-judge panel to conduct an evidentiary hearing and make findings of fact, see Wis. Stat. ??757.89, because the justices, the final decision-makers, already know the facts.? Consequently, any findings of fact by the three-judge panel would be window-dressing at best.

?5?? In the recent past, this court has employed the common law "Rule of Necessity" when deciding to adjudicate a particular matter but has never applied the Rule of Necessity in a case in which the justices were also material witnesses.? Under the Rule of Necessity, "where all are disqualified, none are disqualified."? Ignacio v. Judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, 453 F.3d 1160, 1165 (9th Cir. 2006) (internal quotations omitted).? Given the unique factual situation of the instant case, applying the Rule of Necessity would produce an absurd result: even Justices Bradley and Prosser would presumably be required to participate.? Certainly, application of the common law Rule of Necessity should not result in the defendant, potential defendant, and the witnesses also sitting in final judgment of the case.

?6?? Unfortunately, some parties do not receive their day in court despite wishing to be heard.? For example, some parties are deprived of their day in court because the statute of limitations has passed, a court order has been violated, evidence is suppressed, or a myriad of other circumstances occur that have nothing to do with the merits of the underlying dispute.? Here, if a quorum of four justices cannot hear this matter, this may be one of those circumstances.

?7?? Justice is supposed to be blind, but justice is not supposed to turn a blind eye to the obvious.? An obvious conflict is presented by simultaneously participating as material witness and final decision-maker.? Given these extraordinary circumstances, I simply see no legitimate basis upon which I could participate in this case.? Thus, I respectfully disqualify and recuse myself from the above-referenced matter.

In 1969, Bernie Finkelstein founded True North Records. Finkelstein managed The Paupers from 19661967 and Kensington Market from 1967-1969. Through 1972-1981, in partnership with Bernie Fiedler, he managed the careers of Abramson, Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan and Dan Hill. Frustrated..... should i be

My wife works nights and I work days. I have a 15 year old step son and an 11 year old step son. I also have a 3 year old son. Both of my step children have chores I assigned to them. However when I come home my wife has continually done the chores for them. She them makes excuses for them as to why they shouldn't have to do it. I mean their chores are to simply do the dishes for the day and to do laundry, fold it, take it to the person that it belongs to's room.

IMO that is perfectly within their capabilities. Anyway I keep coming home and my wife asks me to do said dishes/ laundry. I ask her why one of the kids hasn't done it? then she lays into me trying to put everything off on the kids.

Well while my wife is getting angry my step kids are doing nothing but watching TV and playing computer.

How is giving a 15 yr old and a 11 year old responsibilities that are well within their capabilities me shirking my duties. My wife never asks for help from the kids until she gets to a point where she is angry. Even though I am at work all day and the kids have been home for the summer.

Then I get everything dumped on me. It isn't like I do nothing I am the guy the fixes junk, mows the lawn and stuff like that. My step children do nothing. It urkes me to hell because while I was a rebellious teen I was still expected to help. My parents made me do things around the house.

When we came up with the responsibilities my wife was sitting right there next to me okaying everything.
I am really stressed out about this. My wife and I both work and I feel like the kids should be doing a lot more around the house everyday. Vaccuming, cleaning, laundry, and all of that. Not because I don't want to do it. But because my wife and I both work and the kids do NOTHING.

Ford profit falls 57 pct to $1 billion in 2Q

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? Ford's profit fell 57 percent in the second quarter as losses in Europe and Asia swamped a healthy performance in North America.

The company also lowered its full-year profit forecast on Wednesday. The automaker said it still expects a "strong" operating profit, but it will be lower than the $8.7 billion in 2011. Previously Ford had expected to make about the same amount as 2011.

Ford now expects to lose more than $1 billion in Europe this year, more than double its estimate at the beginning of this year.

Ford earned to $1 billion, or 26 cents per share, in the quarter, compared with $2.4 billion, or 59 cents, a year earlier. Without one-time items, including the sale of two parts factories, it earned 30 cents. That beat Wall Street's forecast of 28 cents.

Quarterly revenue fell 6 percent to $33.3 billion.

Ford posted a $2 billion profit in North America in the second quarter thanks to higher pricing and highly anticipated new vehicles like the Ford Escape. That was up 5.3 percent from a year earlier.

But Ford lost $404 million in Europe, down from a profit of $176 million last year, as sales slowed because of the economic crisis. Ford said it sold 359,000 cars and trucks in the region, down 15 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Ford also lost market share in Europe as it refused to ramp up deals to lure buyers.

Ford lost $66 million in Asia, where it is in the midst of a multiyear plan to increase production and vehicle offerings. That was down from a $1 million profit in the same quarter a year earlier.

Ford's profits also narrowed considerably in South America, where it is being hurt by older products and rising tariffs. The company earned $5 million in South America in the second quarter, down 98 percent.

Motherhood Uncensored: In like a lion, out like a rack of lamb

I really wasn't surprised to hear that my mom was pissed that I tossed her rack of lamb.?It was just one of the many [two 2-ton dumpster full] casualities in my house cleaning extravaganza. ?

And this week, she finally heads home after spending the last month with a family friend, so I'm sure this will only be the start. More than enough reassurance as to why I live 800 miles away.?

I had this brilliant idea to Facetime with her as she walked through the house for the first time since she had her heart surgery but then I realized that might not be as smart. The last thing I need is for me to be excited about the completely cleaned out kitchen cabinets and her freaking out about where all her dishes went.?

(In a box. In a garage. It's all the other stuff in the kitchen I tossed, Mom).

There's really no hope for her not to be angry at me at some level. I saved what I thought was important and tossed what I thought was not. But because I'm not her (and she's not me), her definition of important and mine are probably a little off.?

Actually, I'm sure of it based on all the crap that was in her house.?

I imagine much of what I tossed she won't even miss. And if she does, like say her obsolete nursing textbooks from 1994 that are all now in their 5th edition and she never uses, ?I told my brother to tell her I packed them away in a box in the basement.?

But I'm hoping that the hospital grade cleaning that brought me to tears when I my brother sent me pictures and the fresh coat of paint will help ease the shock.?

Add in the power washing, which my brother described as "Harry Potter like" when all the throngs of daddy long legs spiders leapt away from the house during his chemical pre-treatment, the new air conditioner (which hadn't worked for a couple of years - eep!), and a little bit of landscaping.

We even purchased a new television and family room furniture set to make up for the one we tossed that was so completely covered in dust and cat hair that we couldn't even donate it.?

The truth is she's been wanting to sell the house for years but could never bring herself to do what I did, probably because she would never have been able to do it herself.?

I could barely do it myself, even with the help of my brother and his wife.

So now it's ready. And I hope she sees what everyone else is telling me it is: A gift.?

The money I put in her account will be more than enough for her to purchase what she thinks she's missing, which so far is a pretty important?rack of lamb.?

And if it doesn't, I will happily remind her that she was sleeping on the original mattress she had when she moved into the house. In 1978.?

With pictures to remind her of its condition.

And that I found mouse shit in her silverware drawer.?

Taliban kill 10 in attack on rival in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A Taliban suicide car bomber attacked a rival militant commander's compound in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 10 people, as heavily armed assailants killed eight members of the coast guard in the southwest, officials said.

There has been significant infighting over turf and leadership positions within the Pakistani Taliban, an umbrella organization set up in 2007 to represent roughly 40 insurgent groups, many of whom are waging a bloody campaign against the government.

The compound that was attacked in Spin Dal village in the Orakzai tribal area was owned by militant commander Mullah Nabi, said senior tribal police official Amjad Khan. Nabi was once a close ally to a prominent Pakistani Taliban commander from Orakzai, Mullah Toofan, but the two are now fierce rivals.

Nabi was at the compound when the attack occurred but was not hurt, said Khan. The 10 killed included five children, he said.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan saying it was carried out because Nabi had turned against the Taliban. Ahsan spoke by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The Pakistani army has waged multiple offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in Orakzai and other parts of the tribal region, but the militants continue to stage frequent attacks against military and civilian targets.

The coast guard camp that was attacked Saturday was in the port city of Gwadar in Baluchistan province, said local coast guard official Hidayat Ullah. The assault initially killed six members of the force and wounded two others, but they later died of their wounds, said Ullah.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Baluchistan is home to both Islamist militants and nationalists who have been waging a decades-long insurgency against the government for greater autonomy and a larger share of the province's natural resources.

A roadside bomb also exploded near a passenger bus elsewhere in the northwest Saturday, killing three people, said police officer Zahir Shah. The attack in Upper Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province also wounded seven people, Shah added.

When v2.0 of the Sky Go for Android app arrived earlier this month it promised another update would follow soon with support for Android 4.0 and more phones, and now it has arrived. We're not seeing it in Google Play yet, but the press release (included after the break) indicates the app is ready to run on the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note from Samsung, and is also finally Ice Cream Sandwich compatible on those devices and the HTC Sensation / Sensation XE. That brings the total supported device count for the video on-demand player to a round 11, which is less than the "all" we're looking for but still more than the zero supported prior to February.
