The Toronto Board of Trade provides several events for its members and the Toronto business word in general, which feature some of the most successful business men and women in the city. One highly anticipated event is the yearly dinner.

The Board of Trade is holding its 125th annual dinner at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on January 28, beginning at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $425 for Board of Trade members or $4,250 for a table of 10, $500 for non-members or $5,000 for a table of 10. Guests must register before January 11.

The keynote speaker for this year?s event will be Rick Waugh, CEO of Scotiabank. It will also feature Leo DelZotto, winner of the Toronto Region Builder Award. This yearly event usually draws the elite of the Toronto business world and will be an excellent networking opportunity for Toronto business leaders and a chance to hear what the keynote speaker has to say about the business climate of the area.

Attendees will very likely be arranging with Toronto printing companies for a fresh business card printing order. They will want to ensure that they have a plentiful supply of cards to exchange with their business peers and that those cards contain up-to-date contact information. There will be plenty of time to exchange cards over dinner and to even time to give that ?elevator speech?, which gives a background of the businessperson and of his or her company.
For more information on the dinner, call 416-862-4500.

Michigan governor signs bill giving local governments fiscal options

(Reuters) - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed into law on Thursday a bill that gives options to cities and school districts for dealing with severe financial problems, including bankruptcy.

The law, passed by the Republican-controlled legislature earlier this month, allows local elected officials to choose between Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy, if the move is approved by the governor; an emergency manager; arbitration with a neutral party; or a consent agreement laying out terms for fixing the government's finances.

It replaces a controversial law repealed by Michigan voters on November 6 that made it easier for the state to intervene in fiscally troubled cities and schools and gave state-appointed emergency managers running the governments the power to suspend collective bargaining agreements with workers.

That law, known as Public Act 4, was suspended in August pending the outcome of the vote and the state has been relying on a former, weaker law since then.

Snyder, a Republican, defended the new law against criticism that it is too similar to Public Act 4.

"This legislation demonstrates that we clearly heard, recognized and respected the will of the voters," the governor said in a statement. "It builds in local control and options while also ensuring the tools to protect communities and schools districts' residents, students and taxpayers."

The law also includes appropriations for administrative expenses, making it ineligible for a petition drive that could result in its repeal by voters.

Because the new law will not take effect for 90 days, it will have no immediate impact on eight cities and school districts currently operating with emergency financial managers and three cities, including Detroit, which are operating under consent agreements.

Even after it kicks in, the law keeps in place existing state-appointed managers and any ongoing review process to determine if a manager is needed, which is the case in Detroit.

Snyder on December 18 named a review team for Michigan's largest city, a step in a process that could lead Detroit to file what would be the biggest-ever municipal bankruptcy.

That team met twice last week and is on an expedited schedule to report to the governor, Caleb Buhs, a spokesman for the Michigan Treasury Department, said on Wednesday.

Detroit was able to avoid the appointment of an emergency manager by entering into the consent agreement earlier this year that gave the state more oversight of the city.

However, slow progress on reforms led state officials to launch a review process earlier this month that could lead to a state-appointed manager, who could decide to take the city to federal bankruptcy court unless the state blocks the move.

German finance minister says worst of euro debt crisis over

First Published Dec 27 2012 09:44 am ? Last Updated Dec 27 2012 09:44 am

Berlin ? Germany?s finance minister says the worst of euro area?s debt crisis appears to be over after three years of worries over Greece and other members of the group of 17 European Union countries that use the single currency.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted Thursday as telling the Bild newspaper: "I think we have the worst behind us."

Schaeuble says Greece and others have recognized that they can only overcome the crisis by implementing reforms and that the Greek government ? which has received two bailouts ? "knows that it cannot financially overburden the other euro states".

Some in Germany have expressed concern about the economy of neighboring France. But Schaeuble says the government there "knows very well that every country must constantly conduct reforms to remain competitive."

Overclock Your Raspberry Pi

Overclock Your Raspberry Pi If you unwrapped a Raspberry Pi for the holidays or grabbed one to tinker with yourself, we already have some great projects you can try. If you wish your Raspberry Pi had a little more juice for that XBMC media center or arcade table, it's not too hard to overclock it.

Over at Jeremy Morgan's .NET blog, he walks you through the process of finding your Raspberry Pi's current clock speed via command line, and then how to overclock the device simply by adding two lines specifying your desired speed for the processor and onboard memory to your Raspberry Pi's config file. In some cases, it's that simple. He notes that your mileage may vary with that technique, but if it works for you, you've successfully overclocked without voiding your warranty.

If that doesn't work, he proposes you update your firmware, install the raspi-config utility, and use that instead, since it has a built-in tool for overclocking. That's the method that worked for Jeremy in the end. For a full walkthrough, complete with step-by-step commands, hit the link below.

'Rescue Me' singer Fontella Bass dies

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Fontella Bass, a St. Louis-born soul singer who hit the top of the R&B charts with "Rescue Me" in 1965, has died.

The singer's daughter, Neuka Mitchell, says Bass died at a St. Louis hospice Wednesday night of complications from a heart attack suffered three weeks ago. She was 72. Bass had also suffered several strokes since 2005.

Bass was born into a family with deep musical roots. Her mother was gospel singer Martha Bass, one of the Clara Ward Singers. Her younger brother, David Peaston, had a string of R&B hits in the 1980s and 1990s. Peaston died in February at age 54.

Her surviving family includes four children. Her husband, jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie, died in 1999.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Christmas Eve 2012

Christmas Eve is almost as big as an event as Christmas Day for me. With a plethora of family, food, and fun, it?s an evening I look forward to all year long.

Last night?s Christmas Eve celebration took place at my grandmother?s house. Some years my aunt Amy hosts the family, but with such a big group?we had almost 30 people last night?my Grammie?s house, with lots of entertaining space, was the place to be the night before Christmas.

The evening started with appetizers and wine.

001

I helped myself to all sorts of nibbles.

004

005

006

And a small glass of red wine. (I was still sick, but I rationalized that a little alcohol might help ?dry me up.? Ha!)

015

My Grammie, the hostess with the mostess, and my sister!

007

My sister and my cousin, Meeghan!

009

The cousins!

010

My sister, mom, and me!

020

Dinner was a catered buffet with all the fixings.

012

The steak tips were especially amazing?so tender and so flavorful!

011

014

After dinner, it was time to pick numbers for the Yankee Swap.

016

018

021

The game quickly turned into swapping mayhem!

030

031

033

The Yankee Swap was a lot of fun this year; there were some hilarious presents in the mix!

032

I ended up with a Sugared Apple Yankee Candle, so I was psyched!

After the Yankee Swap, it was time for dessert.

035

Holy dessert spread!

037

I enjoyed a piece of cake and a couple of Cr?me de Menthe Cookies that I baked for the get-together.

036

All in all, it was a fabulous Christmas Eve!

How do you typically spend your Christmas Eve?
