POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under supervision of Dean of Student Development, the Academic Adviser is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising and retention services to students, assisting them in making decisions affecting their academic progress and success. This position provides direct advising for new and continuing students on academic programs, curriculum requirements, course scheduling, and college policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet ALL of the required qualifications. Please provide copies of all supporting documentation with your application (i.e. transcripts, certifications, licenses, etc.).
- Bachelor's degree in education, social science, or social services
- Two (2) years experience academic advising or student advising
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with students diverse in ability, background, and academic interest
- Strong verbal, written, and computer skills
Salary range: $54,055 - $73,826; 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Summary:
The Academic Adviser is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising and retention services to students, assisting

students on academic programs, curriculum requirements, course scheduling, and college policies and procedures.
Essential Functions:
Advising
- Advise new and continuing students regarding programs of study, program qualifications, course sequence & content, scheduling, prerequisites, recommended credit load, Credit for Prior Learning process, graduation, and transfer options.
- Guide students in making informed decisions regarding educational and career goals.
- Assist all advisees in developing and maintaining a current academic plan that addresses individual needs, a timely graduation plan, success strategies, and experiences/resources that support academic and career goals; monitor plan for students not meeting financial aid good academic standing.
- Assist students in transitioning to the academic environment, monitor college readiness, and review previous coursework and testing results relevant to placement decisions.
- Provide students with information about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; adding or changing programs; transfer options)
- Advise students regarding transferability of courses to and from Gateway Technical College.
- Interpret and apply college academic policies for student degree requirements and academic progress as needed.
- Pursue and demonstrate knowledge regarding assigned cluster programs and related career information.
- Build rapport through regular direct contact with student advisees - individual and small group, on-campus and online.
- Monitor academic progress, providing proactive and timely outreach and intervention.
- Support advisees in developing and following an appropriate program of study to achieve desired career goals.
- Encourage involvement in student organizations and other student life activities.
- Establish and maintain regular contact with targeted at-risk students.
- Respond to student concerns/problems by referring students to appropriate on- and off-campus resources.
- Participate in college-wide retention activities, strategies, and improvement efforts.
- Act as an advocate for students as appropriate.
- Utilize technology to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others.
- Collaborate with staff to identify creative solutions to support student success.
- Work closely with program deans, faculty, and Institutional Effectiveness regarding curriculum updates, scheduling, student concerns, and faculty advising.
- Promote teamwork in the delivery of academic advising and career services to ensure consistency, continuity, and availability.
- Coordinate efforts with enrollment services staff to ensure smooth transitions, efficient processes, and effective customer service; work with Student Financial Aid department in educating students on the Good Academic Standing policy.
- Assist New Student Specialists and College Connection Coaches with planning and facilitating orientations, programs and activities for potential and new students.
- Consult with Institutional Effectiveness, deans, and/or contacts at various transfer institutions regarding course and program transferability, admission and graduation requirements.
- Participate in college committees and ad hoc group projects.
