??Improving the management of people with a family history of breast cancer in primary care: before and after study of audit-based education
In England, guidance from National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) states women with a family history of breast cancer presenting to primary care should be reassured or referred.We reviewed the evidence for interventions that might be applied in primary care and conducted an audit of whether low risk women are correctly advised and flagged.Methods: We conducted a literature review to identify modifiable risk factors. We extracted routinely collected data from the computerised medical record systems of 6 general practices (population approximately 30,000); of the variables identified in the guidance.
We implemented a quality improvement (QI) intervention called audit-based education (ABE) comparing participant practices with guidelines and each other before and after; we report odds ratios (OR) of any change in data recording.
Results: The review revealed evidence for advising on: diet, weight control, physical exercise, and alcohol. The proportion of patients with recordings of family history of: disease, neoplasms, and breast cancer were: 39.3%, 5.1% and 1.3% respectively.
There was no significant change in the recording of family history of disease or cancer; OR 1.02 (95% CI 0.98-1.06); and 1.08 (95% CI 0.99-1.17) respectively. Recording of alcohol consumption and smoking both increased significantly; OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.30-1.43); and 1.42 (95% CI 1.27-1.60) respectively.
Recording lifestyle advice fell; OR 0.84 (95% CI 0.81-0.88).
Conclusions: The study informs about current data recording and willingness to engage in ABE. Recording of risk factors improved after the intervention.
Further QI is needed to achieve adherence to current guidance.

'Corpse flower' attracts thousands to Washington garden
WASHINGTON ? It seems a more fitting subject for an Edgar Allan Poe story: a towering maroon blossom that emits the odor of rotting flesh.
Up to 20,000 visitors packed the U.S. Botanic Garden on Monday to catch a whiff of the rare titan arum bloom, also known as the corpse flower, before the short-lived flowering ends.
Found in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, the titan arum takes years to bloom, but its inflorescence, one of the largest in the world, remains open for only 24 to 48 hours. The powerful odor serves to attract carrion beetles and other insects for pollination.
While the U.S. Botanic Garden has 14 corpse flowers, this is the first to bloom since 2007. Southern California enthusiasts have previously taken in the stink of the titan arum at the Fullerton Arboretum in 2006 and at the Huntington Library in 2010.
Botanists and the public were anticipating the Washington event for a week before the plant finally bloomed Sunday evening. During that time, more than 400,000 viewers logged on to a webcam monitoring the plant's progress.
Bill McLaughlin, the garden's curator of plants, heard that the titan arum was about to bloom Sunday and arrived just in time to see it open around 6 p.m.
Crowds soon converged on the garden, forming a line that wove slowly through the shrubbery. Many visitors wore suits or high heels as they stole away from work for a quick peek.
Though it smelled sweet at first, McLaughlin said, the stench soon "began descending from the roof, like a pile of dead animals."
"It's hilarious that all these people are here to smell something awful," he said.

Mixamo Is Building A Platform For Game Developers To Create And Animate 3D Characters
With app stores becoming ever more competitive, game makers have had to upgrade from building 2D games to creating 3D titles over the past two years. That has meant even more creative and intensive work for artists and producers, as the graphics processing power on smartphones has increased. But there are tools to help. Mixamo is a 25-person startup that has existed very quietly for the past five years. Even though they haven’t really spoken to the press much before, they’ve raised about $11 million in total and have racked up customers like Microsoft, EA, Sony, Blizzard and Gameloft. They’re a web-based service that helps developers rig and animate 3D characters by making rigging and animation easier. A developer can upload the mesh for a character, place joint locators and locator rings to figure out how to make the character move, and then run Mixamo’s auto-rigging software. For console titles, the company says they can cut the cost of producing animations by anywhere from 70 to 80 percent compared to standard techniques like keyframing and motion capture. An offshoot from some research out of Stanford’s BioMotion Lab, the company has built up a store where they sell existing characters and animations on top of a subscription-based service. (They’re one of the largest animations providers in the asset store for Unity, a hugely popular game development platform backed by Sequoia Capital). “We are an end-to-end 3D character art solution that allows developers and artists to easily and affordably create, rig and animate high-quality characters,” said Stefano Corazza, the CEO and co-founder of Mixamo. Naturally, Mixamo has a SaaS-based business model, where they sell subscriptions by the seat to gaming studios. Their All Access product gives studios one year of unlimited access to their 3D characters, Auto-Rigger and their library of thousands of animations for $1,500 per seat. They’re seeing developers handle about 800 or 900 characters per week and have a few thousand customers. Hundreds of thousands rally for Turkey's Erdogan amid protests

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan rallied hundreds of thousands of supporters at an Istanbul parade ground on Sunday as riot police fired teargas several kilometers away in the city centre to disperse anti-government protesters.
Erdogan told a sea of flag-waving supporters that two weeks of protests had been manipulated by "terrorists" and dismissed suggestions that he was behaving like a dictator, a constant refrain from those who have taken to the streets.
Riot police fired teargas into side streets around the central Taksim Square as he spoke, trying to prevent protesters from regrouping after hundreds were evicted from the adjoining Gezi Park, the centre of the protests, late on Saturday.
"They say 'you are too tough', they say 'dictator'. What kind of a dictator is this who met the Gezi Park occupiers and honest environmentalists. Is there such dictator?," Erdogan said to roars of approval from the crowd.
"The attitude across Turkey with the pretext of Taksim's Gezi Park is not sincere. It is nothing more than the minority's attempt to dominate the majority ... We could not have allowed this and we will not allow it," he said.
Bulldozers removed barricades and municipal workers swept the streets around Taksim, sealed off by police on Sunday after thousands took to the streets overnight following the raid by riot police firing teargas and water cannon.
The umbrella protest group behind the Gezi Park campaign, Taksim Solidarity, called for demonstrators to gather peacefully again in the square, but Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu made clear they would not be allowed to do so.
"Any call for (people to gather in) Taksim will not contribute to peace and security," he told reporters, as riot police fired teargas in several locations to disperse groups of demonstrators trying to reach the square.
"After the current environment becomes stable, they can continue exercising their democratic rights. Under current circumstances we will not allow any gathering."
Erdogan, who also addressed supporters of his ruling AK Party in Ankara on Saturday, said the rallies were to kick off campaigning for local elections next year and not related to the protests, but they are widely seen as a deliberate show of strength.
IMAGE TARNISHED
The blunt-talking prime minister has long been Turkey's most popular politician, overseeing a decade of unprecedented prosperity, and his AK Party has won an increasing share of the vote in three successive election victories, but his critics complain of increasing authoritarianism.
While the protests pose no immediate threat to his government, they have tarnished Turkey's image as a haven of stability in a turbulent Middle East.
Two union federations said on Sunday they would stage a one-day nationwide strike on Monday in protest at the forced eviction of the Gezi Park protesters.
The protesters, who oppose government plans to build a replica Ottoman-era barracks in the leafy park adjoining Taksim Square, had defied repeated calls to leave but had started to reduce their presence in the park after meetings with Erdogan and the local authorities.
A similar police crackdown on peaceful campaigners in Gezi Park two weeks ago provoked an unprecedented wave of protest against Erdogan, drawing in secularists, nationalists, professionals, trade unionists and students.
The unrest, in which police fired teargas and water cannon at stone-throwing protesters night after night in cities including Istanbul and Ankara, left four people dead and about 5,000 injured, according to the Turkish Medical Association.

Israel official: Iran sanctions must be tightened
JERUSALEM (AP) ? A senior Israeli official says international sanctions are still needed to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program, despite the election of a reformist-backed president.
Yuval Steinitz, Israel's minister of intelligence and strategic affairs, said Sunday that there won't be any change on Iran's nuclear policy since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei still runs the country.
Steinitz is responsible for monitoring Iran's nuclear program.
Despite Hasan Rowhani's surprise victory in Friday's election, all key decisions ? including nuclear efforts, defense and foreign affairs ? remain solidly in the hands of the ruling clerics and their powerful protectors, the Revolutionary Guard.
Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Tehran's calls for Israel's destruction. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Crews working to get more Colo. fire evacuees home
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Firefighters are working to get more people back into their homes after authorities lifted evacuations orders prompted by the wildfire near Colorado Springs.
Crews on Sunday were extinguishing hot spots to protect undamaged homes in Black Forest from flare ups. Meanwhile, utilities were working to restore gas and electricity to the heavily-wooded region.
Residents of areas burned by the fire, now estimated to be about 22 square miles, were able to return briefly to see the devastation Saturday. Evacuees outside the burn area have been allowed back for good.
Nearly 500 homes have been burned by the fire, and two people were killed. Crews hope to have it fully contained by Thursday.

Magellan SmartGPS review: further proof your phone is the only navigator you need
When speaking with executives from the Google Maps team earlier this year at I/O, I was reminded that Maps wasn't even a product in 2004. In less than a decade, one of Google's bright ideas has completely and unabashedly transformed the entire routing industry. (Avid readers will no doubt recall this graph, depicting real moves in the stock market moments after Google Maps Navigation was first introduced.) That development, coupled with the explosion in smartphone adoption across emerged markets, has left players like Magellan in quite the predicament. It wasn't that long ago that dedicated PNDs (personal navigation devices) were the gift to get for the holiday season. And indeed, many units from Garmin in particular delighted me plenty over the years.
But the reality today is that PND makers have found themselves redundant. A few have resorted to innovating on the software side and nailing down partnerships with automakers and fleet-management firms in order to keep revenue rolling in, while Magellan has opted to create a new piece of hardware. That hardware, of course, is the SmartGPS. Rather than being a standalone PND suitable for mounting on one's dash or window, the device works best when used in concert with an accompanying iPhone or Android app (sorry, Windows Phone and BlackBerry users). In essence, the company is hoping that by creating a product that extends the functionality of your smartphone, you'll be inclined to hand over $250. After a week of road tripping through the US southwest, however, I'm inclined to believe differently.

There is so much to learn from animals? Once upon the time Dogs were benefiting a human form in one of the trillions billions of worlds above and they had a spirit similar to ours?sad enough those ?sub-human? God creation failed the ?experiment and did not make a good use of the feeling of love. In fact they did not want to understand, use, promote and deal with love period and their world was bitter,?bloody?and dangerous.
Humanity is in the same path with the spirit because you can not separate the spirit from love and the love of God?
