Improving the CC Legal User Interface - Creative Commons

Last month at the New and Emerging Legal Infrastructures Conference I had the pleasure of participating in a panel on Interface Design for Legal Systems. See my presentation on slideshare or as a pdf.

This led to some reflection upon and discussion of Creative Commons? ?Legal User Interfaces? (LUIs). Each of the ?layers? (the legalcode or license itself, the ?human-readable deed? explanation of the license, and a ?machine-readable? description of the license) of CC licenses serve both as user interfaces and opportunities to build upon to create further user interfaces, as are CC license buttons, the license chooser, and search. I focused on the deeds, which probably most transparently serve as LUIs, and as they are highly visual and subject to obvious critique, make for good presentation and discussion material.

See my presentation for images of BY-SA deeds going back to 2003.After the conference, my colleagues Diane Peters, Alex Roberts, and Chris Webber made two (or three, depending on how one counts; see this bug for the action) improvements to the deeds based on feedback we?ve gotten or frequently give that are in hindsight pretty obvious:

• Under the ?You are free:? heading, ?to make commercial use of the work? had been dropped in late 2006 from deeds for licenses without the NonCommercial (NC) condition in preparation for adding ?share? and ?remix? icons (a ?commercial use? icon would have constituted icon overload and pushed important conditions further down the page). While the absence of NC on such licenses is telling, bringing a call-out of commercial use permission back to the deeds seems appropriate given occasional criticism that some associate CC only with NC use.
• Speaking of icon overload, one thing I often notice when someone has an idea along the lines of ?CC for X? (where X is most frequently related to privacy) is a tendency to invent a whole bunch of icons to represent a complex space. But lots of icons means most won?t be widely recognized and many won?t be intuitive. It?s really hard to come up with an intuitive icon to represent often abstract concepts! This reflection made it easy to drop the ?share? and ?remix? icons (keeping the text) from CC deeds while adding commercial use text (see above). Now the only icons on CC deeds are for license conditions, which are reinforced by their presence on CC license buttons on millions of web pages and that the concepts they represent are reflected in CC license names.
• Occasionally someone will complain about the mere existence of CC deeds, as it is the licenses that have legal force, or a softer version, that the deeds may provide a useful overview, but people should really read the licenses (example). Such criticism has always been swamped by appreciation of the value of the quick ?human readable? explanation that the deeds provide. Still, we realized a very simple change would put the full licenses more front and center for anyone who wants to read them in full (please do; more CC expertise in the world is of great help) ? move the notice ?This is a human-readable summary of the Legal Code (the full license).? from the bottom to the top of CC deeds!

Initial reaction to these changes has been very positive, but we welcome criticism and suggestions for further improvement. One nice thing about these changes is that they did not require any new or changed text, thus creating no new work for translators. However, if you see anything that could be improved in your language, joining a CC translation team is a really valuable way to get involved.

Although we don?t usually post about small tweaks to the various CC layers and tools (again, all of which serve as LUIs and building blocks for further interfaces), we?re constantly on the lookout for improvements and have worked particularly on the With the understanding that: section of the deeds over the past year or so.

South Sudan reports mass displacement in Abyei

May 27, 2011 (KHARTOUM) ? A South Sudanese official on Friday claimed that 150, 000 people have fled the country?s flashpoint region of Abyei since it was seized over the weekend by north Sudan army.

Internally displaced people gather in Turalei, in the south?s Twic county, about 130 km (80 miles) from Abyei town, May 27, 2011 (Reuters Pictures) James Kok Ruea, South Sudan minister of Humanitarian Affairs, told the BBC that people had been fleeing Abyei since the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) of north Sudan occupied the region in retaliation for an ambush blamed on South Sudan army, the Sudan People?s Liberation Army (SPLA).

SAF troops were ambushed as they were being escorted out of the region by peacekeepers from the UN Mission in Sudan.

?The situation is terrible - they are running in fear from brutal violence, without shelter," Ruea was quoted.

But the figure put forward by the southern minister significantly exceeds that of the UN, which puts the number at between 30,000 and 40,000.

The UN said, in an assessment report released on Friday, that its air and ground patrols over 10 villages north and south of Abyei town showed that the area was empty except for a "heavy presence of armed men.?

According to Sudan?s 2008 census, the sparsely populated region of Abyei has only 52,883 people, including the populations of the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms, the Messirya Arab nomadic tribe as well as other Sudanese residents in the area.

The International Organization of Migration (IOM) on Friday said that thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) have poured into Southern Sudan?s Warrap, Unity and Northern Bahr El Ghazal states.

IOM said it had registered four truckloads of IDPs who arrived in Turalei in Warrap State on May 25th in addition to 1,000 IDPs who arrived on May 26 in Wunrok, south of Turalei.

Meanwhile, the New York Human Rights Watch on Friday accused the Sudanese government of mobilizing its forces to loot and destroy civilian property in Abyei, one day after the UN reported that items of emergency relief at its premises and those of other NGOs in Abyei were looted.

The Sudanese government ?should immediately end the mass displacement of civilians and other abuses by soldiers and allied militias [in Abyei],? said Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

Abyei region, the site of north-south tribal overlapping, is a major point of contention in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which ended more than two decades of civil wars between north and south Sudan in 2005.

The status of the oil-producing region was supposed to be determined through a referendum vote in January but the plebiscite never materialized due to disagreements between north and south Sudan over who can vote.

2011 Billboard Awards: The Worst of the Worst - Arts and Entertainment

The 2011 Billboard Music Awards were certainly interesting this year. To me, this awards show sort of felt like the accidental baby in the family of awards shows. It came late, way behind the Oscars and the Grammy's. The timing could've been forgivable, had it not been so anti-climactic. It seems as though it didn't know what to do with itself.

The host, Ken Jeong (who is usually hilarious), fell flat. The audience seemed bored. The transitions were awkward. Even Britney Spears seemed lost. But we'll get to that.

Here are my best of the worst picks for the evening:

Tied for first in the Worst Performance category were Rihanna and the Black Eyed Peas. Rihanna started the show with her hit single "S&M," which just came off as being awkward. Am I the only one who wants to take her to therapy? Wasn't it only a year or so ago that Chris Brown was beating her up?

Either way, Rihanna was trying to be sexy, but just came off as being awkward. Hands were popping up out of the stage, trying to grope her. It just left me stale. I felt violated and mortified. "This can't get any worse," I thought.

Oh contraire. That's when Britney joined her on stage. And then they both tried to be strippers. Needless to say, it did not go well.

As for the Black Eyed Peas, they delivered another techno disaster. I'm not sure if they realize it or not, but they have passed their prime. People don't really care much about them anymore. Nor, really, did anyone ever.

I can't describe to you what their performance was like, simply because there was no performance. It was just Will.I.Am and Fergie prancing around the stage with the other two guys trying to keep up. I'm not impressed, Peas, not impressed.

Just as a side note, I'm pretty sure that Britney Spears was lip-syncing during her duet with Nicki Minaj, though I'm not surprised. Again, she seemed pretty lost.

Tied for the Most Undeserved Win were Justin Bieber and, again, the Black Eyed Peas. Justin Beiber won the most streamed artist, but really only because of the thirteen year old girls (who, as we've seen with "Twilight," are apparently a force to be reckoned with). Let's be honest. Justin didn't win because he's talented or creative. He won because his fans are psycho and want his body (which he hasn't even grown into yet).

But they will be especially crucial in Monaco as Pirelli bring their super soft tyre for the first time. The red-walled tyre will be offered alongside the soft.

But that was partly because drivers knew that if one lap was spoiled their tyres would be good for another go. That will probably not be the case with Pirelli?s fragile super-softs.

That means striking the balance between qualifying well and preserving tyres will be all the more difficult at Monaco.

Justin Bieber tied with Eminem as the top winner at Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards with six trophies. But it was his embrace of reported sweetie Selena Gomez that set the Internet on fire after a night that saw splashy performances from Rihanna, an upside-down Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Mary J. Blige with Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz, the Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.

Bieber's awards included trophies for Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Album and Top Streaming Song at his first-ever trip the show. Meanwhile, veteran Eminem (who was not in Las Vegas for the show) nabbed Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album for his smash comeback, Recovery.

Green wore a sparkly outer-space outfit while playing piano and singing a medley of his hits ("Crazy," "Bright Lights Bigger City" and "Forget You"); he levitated over the stage and pounded the keys of his silver piano while hanging upside down at one point.

But perhaps the biggest moment of the night was when Beyoncé was presented with the prestigious Billboard Millennium Award, which was preceded by a video honoring her with testimonials from First Lady Michelle Obama, Bono, Lady Gaga, Bey's parents and sister Solange, Stevie Wonder, The-Dream and Barbra Streisand.

She accepted the award after an eye-popping performance of her new single, "Run the World (Girls)," which was highlighted by a breathtaking digital background featuring a shifting array of effects that produced a legion of virtual backup dancers and CGI-like movie effects.

Out of breath from her performance, Beyoncé thanked her mother and father for teaching her about hard work, as well as former Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, past DC members and, in a break with their usual low-key nature, husband Jay-Z.

"I'd also like to thank my best friend, and I don't want to put you on the spot because I know they're probably putting a camera in your face right now, but I love me some Jay-Z," she said with a smile.

The city is brimming with killers, thieves, and corrupt city officials. Everyone is out for themselves except for Cole Phelps. He seeks justice and follows the evidence to the letter. In a police department that is short on hard workers, he?s a diamond in the rough.

Since Cole is such an upstanding young man, he is placed with partners who lack any work ethic at all. The city of Los Angeles has forced each of them to be slackers, stuck in their ways, or outright over-confident in their duties. Through each division Cole and his partner will bond during the most hard-nose cases. They may never see eye to eye, but they?ll understand each other better by the end of their run. Combine this with a large case that unfolds around the smaller ones, and you have an outstanding Noir experience.

? Being a detective has never been more rewarding.

When L.A. Noire is mentioned, many people will compare it to, Heavy Rain. When in truth, it?s a lot more interactive and involved than that game. I love what Heavy Rain is, but everything is handled through Quick time events. In L.A. Noire, you take control of Cole in every aspect. When handling evidence, you can utilize the analog sticks and properly examine for clues. During interrogations, you?re sitting in front of someone and studying their features for the truth.

Detective work expands itself over the course of the game. Players will start off with a perfect 5 star score for diligent work. However, when the game stops holding the users hand? there will be plenty of times when meticulous work isn?t good enough. It?s usually not in the investigations that you?re stumped. It?s the interrogations and questioning of witnesses, that can sink your case. Pressing a suspect with the wrong question can upset them, and leave players without a pivotal piece of information.

The player is in charge of the scene, searching for any and all evidence that they can find. After that, they?ll hit the grindstone and locate the person responsible. This could end up with them tailing the suspect, or involved in a daring chase across the rooftops of the city. Either way, L.A. Noire makes sure that you?re settled in the driver?s seat.

? Motion Scan has created some of the best faces in the video game industry.

It combines well with the voice work of each actor portrayed on screen. To watch a human face emote during conversations, and break down from the pressure is astounding. You?ll catch subtle eye movements, and see every wrinkle of the skin. It?s so in-depth at points that it can be a little eerie to the eye. It only looks out of place in certain areas, but for the most part it?s spectacular.

Let?s not say that this is the only thing of beauty in L.A. Noire. The replication of a 1940?s Los Angeles as close as one could get. To be honest, this may be the most atmospheric of open world games. The streets are usually well populated with cars, and civilians who are minding their own business. It?s rare to look down a street and not see a wide range of hustle and bustle in the area.

The true essence of the world is captured in the sound. If I didn?t already say that the voice-acting is phenomenal, I wouldn?t be giving this game its due respect. Motion Scan technology aside, this is possibly the closest that a game can get to a movie. Each actor portrays their role in a highly believable manner, the passion for the craft comes out in their voices. You can tell that this wasn?t just thought of as some side gig.

The sound of the city also contributes to the success of things. You?ll become familiar with Cole being recognized by many civilians, or talking about current events. The sound of gunshots is clear and crisp, and so are the weight of footsteps tapping on the pavement. The detail even carries over to the handpicked jazz music, and the orchestrated beats that play during action sequences. L.A. Noire is the cream of the crop when it comes to tickling the ear drums.

Hated

? Random crimes seem to go against the nature of the game.

Players will stumble on these crimes constantly through the course of their playtime. They all boil down to shooting enemies dead or chasing after someone. The outcome ends with Cole killing most of these people and calling it in. It goes against the investigative nature of the game itself. The crimes seem to cater to shooter fans that picked up the wrong disc. I would rather crimes lead to real cases, where the player has to investigate sequences that can lead to bigger situations. Too bad they are all just short snippets of unnecessary violence.

? L.A. Noire is definitely not a game for everybody.

It depicts graphic violence and nudity with real life faces. Women and different races are constantly mistreated throughout the game. It?s clear that unless you have the stomach for it, L.A. Noire probably won?t be your cup of tea. That?s not mentioning that at least 80% of the game is conversation. So if you?re looking for an action packed shooter, you won?t fare well looking in this direction.

? There are some bugs that can intrude on the experience.

Players will be faced the usual pop-in objects and lowered frame rates. Since these are all things we?ve become accustomed to in open world games. The real issues are a little more daunting. During certain conversations, the audio will go completely out of sync. At other times, players will catch an odd jittering of an actor?s head. When these bugs occur, you will most definitely not appreciate it.

L.A. Noire is a revolutionary in bringing that big screen feeling to your console. The Motion Scan technology takes the big leap forward. Team Bondi has done an admirable job creating a interactive movie experience. At 20 hours of game play, there isn?t much to complain about here. If you?re a fan of the investigation, and film Noir? you should look no further. L.A. Noire receives an A from Half-Ass Gaming, today? the modern day adventure game is born.
