Be fashionable wearing ski helmet covers

A ski helmet is a very important item that is requested if you're planning on skiing in the mountains. Without it, you would be exposed to a series of risks that can even put your own life into dangers. However, ski helmets look rather plain and rough especially for kids, even if they sometimes are available under brighter colors such as pink or yellow.

This is why ski helmet covers represent great ways of making the helmets seem much more appealing. There are plenty of amazing choices that you can decide on if you would like to surprise your kids such as plush covers. On the other hand, you will also benefit from a wide range of helmet covers that were created for women who want to look fashionable even when they're skiing. Another important role for the cover of a ski helmet is the fact that it represents an extra protection for your head.

As mentioned before, plush ski helmet covers are very popular especially among children because they look just like plush animals which are so cute and lovely. This way, they are more than useful accessories, being also very trendy even for young kids. Among the animals which are featured on these plush ski helmet covers you will come across pandas, monkeys, lions, bears, snow leopards and so on.

The ski helmet covers which have been created for women are usually based on patterns such as zebra, leopard or tiger ones that are completed at the front part with a fur attachment. These helmet covers will complete your ski outfit in a very trendy and fun way that is going to make skiing very comfortable and also fashionable. If you would like to take things even further on the fun side, you are actually able to purchase arlequin helmets for you and your children as well.

Time-lapse video captures Sandy?s wrath on New York City

A video on YouTube condenses superstorm Sandy's strike on New York City into about two minutes. The video was created by SMvideoChan, who confirmed to Yahoo News on email that it is taken from the Northside Piers Towers in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The bridge you can see is the Williamsburg Bridge.

The time-lapse video covers two days, from the early morning on Oct. 29 until? Oct. 30 --? and one very long night of the storm.

The clip shows the darkening sky, the intensity of the wind as water becomes choppy with swells, then rain and, finally, the loss of power to part of the city.

The rainfall is so heavy at times the Manhattan skyline almost disappears from view. Then, as night falls, the power goes. Even sped up, the city looks dark and lonely.

Finally, daylight, calm waters and the storm clouds can be seen blowing over.

The London 2012 Games legacy is an ideal way of encouraging young people not only to take up sport but to engage with social science as well, researchers at Bournemouth University believe. Young people in Dorset will have the chance to question whether hosting London 2012 has brought benefits to the area in which they live as well as to the UK as a whole at an event as part of the Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) Festival of Social Science.

"There is growing research on the impact of large scale events on society at both a local and national level," says Dr Debbie Sadd, of Bournemouth University, who is organising the event. Most young people's perception of the Olympics and the London 2012 legacy will have been heavily influenced not only by what they saw but also by what media they used and their immediate social circles. Dr Sadd believes it is vital to encourage young people to challenge these perceptions, to ensure they as the next generation can give themselves a voice in the future.

If young people read something about a London 2012 legacy issue on Facebook or through viral marketing, Dr Sadd is asking how their perception will change if they are subsequently told about the same issue by someone who has perhaps protested, or taken a moral stand.

"As social science researchers, we want to see what they respond to, what helps them change their minds and what makes them think differently," she says.

The event will provide an ideal opportunity to promote the value of social science research, and how it can be used to unpack the London Games. The young people taking part will have the opportunity to see how evidence can be examined, how critical thinking can be applied and how practice can be changed as a result.

"We believe the topic is of particular value to young people. Central to the promotion of London 2012 has been the idea that they will benefit from Olympic values such as respect and trust. It will also encourage participation from young people whose experience has been uniquely shaped by local proximity to Olympic activities in Weymouth, Dorset," Dr Sadd states.

Dr Sadd anticipates a great deal of lively debate among the people taking part. The event will enable them to challenge the presenters, and to use evidence to challenge their own perceptions.

Dr Sadd concludes: "Young people in future will influence not only local conversations, but national and even global debate on key issues that are of great interest to social scientists. Straight away, they will be making an important contribution to our understanding of how events such as the Olympic Games can impact society as a whole."

Women hoist kettlebells for strength and shapeliness

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Kettlebells, classically a training tool of Russian strongmen, has become a go-to group fitness workout for women in pursuit of strong and sexy bodies, according to fitness experts.

Lorna Kleidman, a world champion in kettlebell competition, said a modern kettlebell workout effectively combines cardiovascular, resistance and range-of-motion training, all in one hour.

"It's all in the swing," said Kleidman, who teaches kettlebell classes at the Fitness Cell Collective in New York City, where women constitute up to 70 percent of her students.

"You can lift the kettlebell as if it were a dumbbell," she added. "But to get the most out of it you need to use it in circular, swinging movement."

Essentially cast-iron, handled balls, the modern kettlebell became a fitness tool when Russian weight lifters took to lifting market counterweights for strength training.

Kleidman said the idea dates back to ancient Greece, where athletes trained by lifting stones with holes in them.

She believes the appeal for women is obvious.

"Kettlebell training keeps lean muscle, burns fat, and gives you a nice round butt you're not going to get with yoga."

Classes typically start with 15-pound (6.8-kg) kettlebells, and can go up to 25 (11.3). Men start with 20-pound kettlebells (9 kg), progressing to 35 pounds (15.8) and above.

Kleidman said it takes about an hour for most people to learn the proper technique of driving, or initiating movement, from the leg and hip while keeping the spine straight.

"There are hundreds of movements," said Kleidman. "Swing it, bring it to hold, rest it in the crook of your elbow."

There are also presses, pushes, and figures-eight, side-to-side twists.

"You're limited only by your imagination," she said.

Paul Katami, group fitness center director at the Equinox fitness center in West Hollywood, California, said more women are overcoming their initial fear of the kettlebell.

He said by lowering the weight of the bells used in classes, people are able to do more complex moves.

"We're keeping the essence of kettlebell training while moving it from personal training to group fitness," said Katami, creator of the upcoming DVD "Ultimate Kettlebell Workouts for Beginners."

He added the swing is the cornerstone kettlebell exercise and that the power of the workout lies in its ability to displace the center of gravity, creating more core involvement.

"If you're holding a dumbbell your center of gravity is fixed in the middle of the palm," he explained. "But with a kettlebell you're dynamically fluctuating the resistance: your center of gravity is off."

Even simple moves, such as squats and bicep curls, are enhanced.

Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), describes the kettlebell advantage as a matter of the position of the mass, the use of momentum and the need to control that momentum.

"We found that the energy expenditure of the kettlebell for one workout was similar to cross country skiing, which is seen as one of strongest physical activities you can do," he said.

McCall is pleased that more women are getting comfortable with weight lifting in general.

"It's a misconception that in order to weight train, women want to stay lighter," he said, "because then they're not really activating the muscles responsible for the definition and tone they want."

He urges would-be kettlebellers to find a certified trainer to teach the technique.

"It's all in the technique," he said. "People look at it say it's dangerous. If you have good technique it's not dangerous at all."

Influenza vaccine may reduce risk of heart disease and death: Flu shot may reduce risk of major cardiac event by 50 percent

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Getting a flu shot may not only protect you from getting sick, it might also prevent heart disease. Two Toronto-based researchers presented studies at the 2012 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress which found that the influenza vaccine could be an important treatment for maintaining heart health and warding off cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks.

Dr. Jacob Udell, a cardiologist at Women's College Hospital and the University of Toronto, and his team from the TIMI Study Group and Network for Innovation in Clinical Research looked at published clinical trials on this subject, dating back to the 1960s.

"For those who had the flu shot, there was a pretty strong risk reduction," says Dr. Udell.

The flu vaccine provided an approximate 50 per cent reduction in the risk of a major cardiac event (heart attack, stroke, or cardiac death) compared with placebo after one year of follow-up. A similar trend was seen for the flu vaccine reducing death from any cause (approximately 40 per cent).

The influenza vaccine reduced cardiovascular events and cardiovascular death in people with or without heart disease.

The combined studies examined a total of 3,227 patients, with an almost equal split between patients with and without established heart disease. Half of the participants were randomly assigned to receive flu vaccine and those that did not typically received a placebo vaccine.

Dr. Udell says these results provide support for current guideline recommendations for influenza vaccination of individuals with a prior heart attack, but for a different reason than simply reducing flu risk. And although it was encouraging to see a reduction in non-fatal cardiac events, he believes a large, lengthier multi-national study would comprehensively demonstrate the vaccine's effectiveness to reduce fatal cardiac events and save lives.

"A large study that was international in scope and representative of patients such as those in North America and Canada in particular could help answer this question," he says.

This research could also potentially boost use of the vaccine, which Udell believes is still woefully low. "The use of the vaccine is still much too low, less than 50 per cent of the general population; it's even poorly used among health care workers," he says. "Imagine if this vaccine could also be a proven way to prevent heart disease."

An Ipsos Reid survey conducted by B.C. and Quebec Lung Associations this year found that 36 per cent of Canadians reported having received a flu shot in 2011.

And according to the Public Health Agency of Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), the 2008 Adult National Immunization Coverage Survey found that vaccination rates for adults 18 to 64 years of age with a chronic medical condition is low at 35 per cent.

It also found that non-institutionalized seniors aged 65 and older have higher coverage, at 66 per cent.

According to the NACI, rates for both groups have declined somewhat since their 2006 survey and fall short of the 80 per cent national targets for influenza vaccine coverage in adults under age 65 with chronic conditions and in seniors.

People with ICDS who get the shot have fewer adverse events The second study, conducted by cardiologists Drs. Ramanan Kumareswaran and Sheldon Singh from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre examined the use of the influenza vaccine in patients with implantable cardiac defibrillators or ICDs.

"Anecdotes suggest that patients have more ICD shocks during flu season. We were trying to figure out what we can do to reduce the amount of shocks in (our clinic's) ICD population during the flu season," says Dr. Kumareswaran.

Patients with ICDs that had appointments at the Sunnybrook Hospital ICD clinic between September 1st 2011 and November 31st 2011 completed a survey that identified their demographics, health status, if they received a flu shot in the past year and opinions towards the vaccine.

The patients' health charts were reviewed to determine all ICD therapies in five months preceding the 2010 flu season (June to October) and for three months during the 2010-2011 flu season (December to March).

A total of 230 patients with an average age between 70 and 74 completed surveys with 179 (78 per cent) patients reported receiving the vaccination in the previous year. Just over 20 per cent did not receive the vaccine.

The patients who did not receive the flu vaccine had a trend toward experiencing more ICD therapies on average. Specifically, 10.6 per cent of patients who received the vaccine received at least one ICD therapy during flu season compared to 13.7 per cent of patients who did not receive the influenza vaccine.

"What is interesting is that if this is consistent over time, it could be of significant benefit to our patient population who already have compromised survival to start with," says Dr. Singh.

"We would like to look at this on a larger scale to determine whether or not our results can be replicated. We're in the process to determine how best to do that." An ICD is a small battery-powered electrical impulse generator implanted in patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac death.

The device is programmed to detect cardiac arrhythmia and correct it by delivering a jolt of electricity or increasing the heart rate to restore a healthy rhythm once an irregular beat has been detected.

About 5,000 Canadians get ICDs every year and there are about 100,000 Canadians who currently have them. (Most Canadians with advanced heart disease are potential candidates for ICDs.)

Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson says these studies strengthen National Advisory Committee for Immunization recommendations for the use of the influenza vaccine in those at high risk of developing influenza related complications, such as patients with heart disease or diabetes, and those who have close contact with those at high risk of developing complications.

"In addition to leading a heart healthy life, having an annual flu shot could be another easy way to help prevent cardiac events," she says.

Dr. Abramson notes that the Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends an influenza vaccination for those at high risk of influenza-related complications or hospitalization (including people with heart conditions, those with diabetes, people over 65 years of age, people with a BMI at or above 40 and children or adults treated with ASA). It is also recommended for people who are most likely to transmit influenza to high risk individuals (family members, friends, coworkers, healthcare provider and caregivers).

Reconnecting With Bones's Lost Doc, Eric Millegan | ComicBook.com

At the New York Comic Con earlier this month, ComicBook.com caught up with Eric Millegan. Millegan is an accomplished actor on television and stage, but is best known to fans?and especially to the convention crowd?as Dr. Zack Addy from the hit Fox series Bones.

Millegan was a fan-favorite character on that series?brilliant, socially awkward and intensely likable, the actor made Addy relatable, likable and half of one of the best non-romantic relationships on TV (with T.J. Thyne?s Jack Hodgins). As a character who didn?t always know what to say, Millegan mastered the art of using timing and sparse dialogue to his advantage, turning silence into a powerful tool and making his occasional monologues and pseudo-scientific explanations even more effective. After he left, the chemistry on the show has never quite been the same, with showrunners and writers strugging to fill the hole left by his character?s departure with a rotating cast of recurring characters rather than attempt to replace Millegan with a new series regular in the role.

With Bones seemingly nearing its end in the next couple of years, a number of fans came up to Millegan at the show lamenting the loss of his character (who was written out of the show in 2008 and has returned infrequently since) and asked whether he might be return someday in the future.

?That would be cool? was his stock answer to most fans, indicating that he either didn?t know of any such plans or at least was playing them close to the vest.

Millegan?s character was written out in one of the show?s more divisive plot twists?revealed to have been the secret apprentice to a cannibalistic serial killer, Addy was arrested for murder after injuring himself in a well-intentioned attempt to destroy evidence without hurting anyone else in the lab.

He confessed and was sentenced to a psychiatric ward, only to return in a later episode and reveal that, while he did help the killer, he never killed anyone himself. Most fans have expected his comeback for a while, and it?s hard to imagine the show going off the air without at least one more visit from Addy, whose most recent appearance involved him breaking out of the asylum to provide assistance to the forensic team at the heart of the series.

Millegan gave us a few minutes during a signing appearance on the show floor to talk about his character, his craft and what?s next for one of the most conspicuously-absent television actors in recent years.

You?re best known for television, but have taken a bit of a sabbatical since you left Bones to work mostly in theater. I haven?t seen you in a feature film?did I miss one?

I?ve done two movies. One of them never came out but my main movie I did was a movie called On Line. It was a small, independent film but we played at Sundance and the Berlin Film Festival. It ultimately was released in 2003. It?s on DVD and I highly recommend it. It?s a good movie?a little racy, it?s not for children?but I think it?s really sweet, but definitely an adult film. You can get it at Amazon.

Now, what brings you to the New York Comic Con? You?re purportedly a pretty laid-back guy and this is?well, an insane environment.

It is! I came here because my friend Marco owns the company [where I'm signing] and he asked if I would be willing to do it. I said, ?Absolutely! It?d be fun.? I just did a convention in Paris, so I?m just getting?this whole convention thing is new to me. Even though I lived in L.A. for years, I never went to Comic-Con in San Diego, so this is fun. I like meeting fans.

Wasn?t there a Bones episode that was at Comic-Con?

There was a Bones episode at Comic-Con? Was I in that episode? There was a comic book episode, in which Zach got really into comic books, but I?m not sure I was in that one.

Now, obviously you?re best known for Bones. That became a very interesting character over time, didn?t it?

He did a lot. A lot happened to him.

Well, and you did a lot of growing as a character?then even once they wrote you out of the show, your return was a Hannibal Lecter thing, helping them find Buffalo Bill. Was that a very different challenge, playing from the other side of the table a bit?

Yes, and I welcomed that challenge. One of my favorite episodes to shoot was the episode in which you find out that I?m the Apprentice, because it was very emotional, and very challenging, and I liked the challenge.

Not every episode does your character have one of the main stories, because I was a supporting character. So some episodes I?m just straight-on helping them solve the case and you don?t learn much about the character. So I always liked the episodes in which you did, and that was one of them, definitely.

Well, and you?ve done a lot of stage work but the things I remember the most about your character is all the nonverbal acting, the stuff that wouldn?t come across as much on stage. It?s an interesting dichotomy, I think.

It?s always about telling a story. Saying your lines on cue, arriving on cue and telling the story. I always feel like that?s the same no matter what kind of acting you?re doing. Certainly you don?t have to project when you?re doing film like you do on stage, but even on stage nowadays you?re heavily miked so you don?t have to work as hard vocally on stage anymore, either.

And what are you doing next?

Well, just last night, I did a cabaret show in town, which I worked on all year. There?s a bunch of music that I?d never done before and it was with a band?it was so much fun.

I just did a film called Lady Peacock, which was shot in August. It?s a small, independent film and so I don?t know what?s going to go on with it or when it?s going to come out?or if it will even be called Lady Peacock whenever it comes out, since titles change.

I?m in New York right now, but I?m going to go back to L.A. for pilot season and try to get another series. That?s my next goal.

Interior Design Tips And Tricks To Decorate Like A Professional ...

Start with a fresh coat of paint. Paint is inexpensive and can make a big change to a room in just a few hours. Go to your local home store and get swatches. Then, come home and imagine what each swatch would look like, and how it would blend with the furniture and other rooms in your home. Choose one and see how different your room looks!

When it comes to lighting and interior design, it is always a good idea to use layers of lighting. A simple overhead light, while it may provide lighting for the entire room, does little for the ambiance so consider adding some accent lights as well. Accent lights can bring focus to specific parts of the room.

When decorating a bathroom, keep moisture in mind. If you have a large bathroom, you may be considering all sorts of things to decorate it with. Just make sure you remember the conditions of a bathroom. Don?t hang any pictures or use any decorations that could be damaged by the moisture.

Make sure that before you engage in designing your home that you have a plan in place. This can help a lot to reduce your worry when you are in the process of designing your home. Also, you can organize your finances better when a plan is in place for your project.

Have plants in your home. You can use fresh flowers, ferns, or even cuttings of some small trees. Plants make a home feel more alive, and they seem to bring the outdoors inside. Plants have a calming effect on most people, and they can provide the kind of textures that make a room seem more interesting.

When you are planning your interior design expenses, make sure some of your funds go to items you can carry with you if you move. You do not want to lose all of your investment because you spent it all in paint, flooring and built-ins. Instead, use at least half of your budget to purchase furniture and other items that can be transported.

Include fans on the ceiling of some of the rooms that the air does not get to as well. This can help to make your guests feel as comfortable as possible when they are hanging out in your home. Also, make sure that the design of the fan matches the ceiling, floors and walls.

Think of a fun theme to make your children?s room when decorating your home. If your children are older, they can help with ideas. Avoid choosing cartoon characters and themes to decorate a room and get creative. If your son loves science, make it an outer-space themed room. For a girl who loves sports, make a sports-themed room.

If you have a husband who likes to sit and watch sports with his friends, invest in an ottoman. These devices are great to reduce the tension on the legs during a long session of watching television. Try to match the ottoman with the couch in your entertainment room for a wonderful look.

If you are buying antique furniture and want to add some flair you can always buy modern handles and hardware for it. You will have a nicely built piece of furniture, and it will look modern to add a new touch to a room. There are many different types of hardware available to suit any style.

Hide clutter under a pedestrian sink in your bathroom using a sink skirt. Generally, these kinds of sinks only show unattractive plumbing, and if you want to store anything under them, everyone will see it. To fix these issues, try finding or making a fabric skirt to attach to your sink.

If you are making decisions about changing the interior decor of your home, get your family involved. Remember that they will need to live with the changes as well. Decisions that are made should be acceptable to everyone to avoid conflict and ill feelings. Your home is the haven for each member of your family, so everyone should feel good about the changes ahead.

Think outside of the box when it comes to your headboard. You can make a strong design statement by creating your own one-of-a-kind headboard. Use your imagination. Anything like an old door, a garden gate, an oriental screen, or metal ceiling tiles can be repurposed as an unique headboard.

Don?t spend a fortune on light fixtures. Sure, putting in new fixtures can make the whole room look better, but many people make the mistake of getting them at ridiculous prices. They can be purchased for much less on various websites, including Amazon. Also, discount stores usually have lovely fixtures.

When thinking of the type of colors you want to have in each room in your home you want to coordinate with the style of your home and the color scheme outside your home. Try your best to coordinate a color scheme with all the rooms in your home and try to make everything look likes it flows together.

Try to shop for antiques that you can use in your interior-design scheme if you are looking to remodel your home. You can find these at yard sales and flea markets all over your state. Not only are these antiques less costly, but they are also made to last as well.

As the beginning of this article has mentioned, interior design can help your home and your family! You don?t have to spend years learning the ins and outs of design, but you can spend a few minutes reading and taking some good advice. The tried and true tips above are sure to be of help to you!
