Eating raisins resulted in significantly fewer calories consumed as compared to other popular snacks

FRESNO, Calif., May 31, 2012 New research recently announced at the Canadian Nutrition Society annual meeting in Vancouver, B.C., suggests eating raisins as an after-school snack prevents excessive calorie intake and increases satiety or feeling of fullness as compared to other commonly consumed snacks.

The study, funded by a grant from the California Raisin Marketing Board, was conducted among 26 normal-weight boys and girls ages 8 11 during a three-month timeframe. Study participants were randomly assigned to eat raisins or other snacks, including grapes, potato chips or chocolate chip cookies, until they were comfortably full. Additionally, each child received the same standardized breakfast, morning snack and lunch on test days. Subjective appetite was measured before and immediately after snack consumption at 15-minute intervals. Key study findings include:

• Food intake following raisin consumption was lower and satiation greater compared to the other snacks
• When eating raisins, children consumed significantly fewer calories when compared to the other snacks in the study
• Grapes, potato chips and cookies resulted in ~ 56 percent, 70 percent and 108 percent higher calorie intake compared to raisins, respectively
• Cumulative calorie intake (breakfast + morning snack + lunch + after-school snack) was 10 percent 19 percent lower after raisins compared to other snacks
• Although all snacks reduced subjective appetite, desire-to-eat was lowest after consuming raisins

The study was conducted by lead researcher, G. Harvey Anderson, Ph.D., Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Physiology, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto and co-investigated by Nick Bellissimo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Nutrition, Ryerson University and Bohdan Luhovyy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University.

"To our knowledge, this is the first controlled study that looks at after-school snacking and satiety among children," said Anderson. "We found consumption of raisins as a snack prevented excessive calorie intake, increased the feeling of fullness, and thereby may help contribute to the maintenance of a healthy weight in school-age children."

Earlier this month OutServe members gathered in Washington, D.C. for the first "Capital Summit: Our Families Matter." The timing couldn't have been more perfect for a summit focused on gay and lesbian military spouses and partners. In the wake of President Obama's historic statement in favor of marriage equality -- specifically mentioning the service of gay and lesbian soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines -- we are optimistic about the future, but there is still a lot of work to do.

Non-government organizations, such as the National Military Family Association, Red Cross, Give an Hour, and Blue Star Families, attended the summit to make their support and resources available to partners and families of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) service members.

But the government offers almost nothing.

Also, last week, an organization committed to banning workplace and career discrimination, Freedom to Work, was on Capitol Hill, fighting for employment nondiscrimination. Specifically, the organization was urging Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA, and was advocating for President Obama to sign an executive order banning federal contractors from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Although ENDA would not affect military personnel, it still is a critical issue to LGBT service members. Even though a majority of LGBT military personnel serve on active duty, many serve in reservist or national guard status, which means their main employment is outside the military, leaving them vulnerable to being fired simply for being gay. No servicemember who chooses to serve their nation should have to feel like they are at risk for losing their job because of who they are.

Even more vulnerable than the servicemember themselves is the family. The military reassigns its active duty personnel every few years, so a partner who has a job in a company or state with protections can only hope that, upon moving, they can find a new job where they don't have to hide their same-sex spouse. Federal contractors employ many people on or close to military bases, so our partners -- who have to get jobs because our benefits don't cover them -- are eager to land these jobs. Our veterans also want to work for contractors, but because of a lack of LGBT workplace protections, federal employers can still fire people just because they're gay or transgender, regardless of how well they do their jobs.

A new study from the Williams Institute shows that an executive order prohibiting workplace discrimination could protect up to 16.5 million American workers, many of whom are servicemembers outside active duty and their spouses, in dire need of providing for their families.

Integrity and respect for all are core military values. Fairness in employment is an American value. The president's personal statement on marriage, and the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," are great steps toward those values, toward treating people equally and fairly. But we are not honoring our families if we don't continue to fight for them, recognize their sacrifices, and provide them with the support -- and the jobs -- that they need. Let's make no mistake, this is am LGBT military issue, too.

Apple CEO Tim Cook opened AllThingsD's D10 conference this evening with a sit down interview, and provided a slightly surprising answer when questioned about the company's penchant for secrecy. Asked by Walt Mossberg whether Apple would be less secretive going forward, Cook replied that "we're going to double down on secrecy on products." That was said with a bit of a smile on his face, it should be noted, but he was clear that it's something he's serious about. On that same note, however, Cook said that Apple would be "super transparent" when it comes to other things, like its work with suppliers and environmental issues -- something that he hopes will be an area where other companies copy Apple. Later during the interview, Cook noted that acquisitions were one part of the doubling-down on secrecy. "We buy companies," Cook said, "we don't like to make it public. It depends on the amount -- if I don't have to, I won't."

Pet birds can be some of the most rewarding pets to own, but they come with a lot more needs and potential problems than other pets, like cats and dogs. One of the most common issues is depression. I know that sounds silly, but birds are sensitive and can easily fall into what we would identify as sadness and depression.

The most common signs of depression in caged birds are pretty simple and very obvious. You will see a loss of appetite, irritability that was not a problem before and feather plucking. Feather plucking can be the most distressing thing you may ever see your bird doing, but it?s not as awful as it seems. Many new bird owners freak out when they walk into the room, their bird cages are strewn with discarded feathers and their birds are naked from the neck down.

So, how do we prevent this unpleasant situation for both our birds and ourselves? The most important thing you can do is to bond with your birds and make sure you have a lifestyle that allows you to spend time with your bird. Birds get lonely very easily and some breeds can even suffer from health issues as a result.

Another one of the best options is to buy parrots in pairs. This, obviously, doubles our costs and the care that you need to have. But, having a companion that is around 24 hours a day will pretty much eliminate the loneliness problem. The only problem from that point is that they may bond with each other more than they will with you.

Lastly, both of these solutions should be coupled with the use of toys and bird mirrors like those you can find at BirdCages.net. Keeping your bird entertained makes a big difference. Also, some birds are tricked by the mirrors into thinking that there is another bird in the cage. It may seem dumb, but it?s effective.

While discussing ?a project with a potential client, she asked for my opinion.

Just ask my brothers and my husband ? I?m never shy with that!

She wanted to know what the quickest way to be perceived as an expert in her field was, and in addition, she hoped it wouldn?t be too expensive or time consuming.

Well, here?s the thing ? I?m opinionated, friendly, helpful, talented with audio software ? but not a miracle worker!

In my opinion ? and others may differ ? you need a book with your name on the cover as the author. That?s step one of a two-step process.

It doesn?t have to be traditionally published, and it probably shouldn?t be. Last week,?Houghton Mifflin Harcourt filed for Chapter 11 protection after nearly 200 years in business, and in spite of having the lion?s share of textbook publishing. Traditional book publishing is drying up as more people choose virtual over physical where books are concerned. Just today I told another potential client that creating?CD?copies of audio books is something that can be done, but that I don?t recommend. Physical product sales are drying up everywhere in the book industry.

You don?t even have to write your own book, though you should have substantial input into it. Ghost writers, co-writers and even collaborative books ? ones where each author is responsible for a chapter ? are great ways to get your name on a book cover.

That?s step one ? step two is to leverage the book into getting speaking engagements, where you can be in front of potential clients and customers.

Who is your perfect client? What sort of groups does that person join? Those are the groups you want to speak to, and trust me ? nearly all of them want speakers, especially if you?re low- or no-cost. Depending on what you want out of that event, speaking for little or no money could be very lucrative for you.

If you want to be seen as the expert in your field, as my potential client does, then look at the opportunities to speak as a way to enhance your expert status and perhaps bring more business into your company. Both of those are very rewarding ? often more rewarding than a paycheck the day of the event, unless you?re a very established speaker.

Here?s the deal ? many people don?t even read books, much less write them. Once you?ve actually written one, all of those people will assume you know what you?re talking about. And research done by UC Berkeley shows that people who speak up are consistently viewed as having greater intellect and leadership skills than their quieter counterparts.

So, write and speak. You?ll dazzle them with your expertise.

If you need help with speaking skills, two organizations I highly recommend (and belong to and learn from) are Toastmasters and the National Speakers Association. The former is mostly about learning good platform skills, and the latter is fabulous for learning the business of speaking as well as great platform skills.

Occupational therapy for kids who are over- or under-sensitive to sound, touch or other senses could help improve their symptoms - but parents and doctors should be careful not to miss an underlying disorder in those children, pediatricians said today.

So-called sensory integration therapy, in which occupational therapists use brushes, swings, balls, music and other tools to help kids adapt to external stimuli, has been controversial among doctors.

One issue is whether kids who are overly sensitive to noise, for example, actually have problems with pathways in their brains involved in processing and responding to sound - or if that?s just one sign of a developmental disorder, such as autism.

"That?s the concern?sensory processing disorder might just be a symptom of another underlying developmental problem,? said Dr. Michelle Zimmer, from Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center, who co-wrote new guidelines on sensory integration therapy for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

?It actually could be that working with an occupational therapist is helpful, but the only caution is that we would like to diagnose the other underlying disorders that go along with sensory problems,? she told Reuters Health.

Young kids who have difficulty with sensory processing may cover their ears when a bell rings or they hear loud voices, chew and suck on inedible objects or rock back and forth in their chairs, for example.

Sensory-Based Therapies
Sensory-based approaches to treating Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) concentrate on correcting or improving the body?s abnormal response to external stimuli.

We all experience the world through our senses- sight, smell, touch, taste and sound. We interpret and react to our surroundings based on information the brain receives from our eyes, nose, skin, tongue, and ears. For the entire time we are awake, these varied sensory organs are continuously sending information to the brain. For those of us without an ASD, the brain filters this constant flow of incoming sensory messages and is able to ignore those that are not relevant at the time.

For example, as I sit at my computer and type, I am only aware of the words appearing on the screen and my fingertips stroking the keys on the keyboard. However, if I allow myself to focus on all incoming sensory messages, I can also hear typing sounds from my colleague?s office, a vehicle passing by, and the low hum of the office heater. I can see the stacks of papers piled on my desk and streaks of sunlight coming through the window blinds. I can feel my clothing against my skin, and even taste the last drops of my morning coffee. Fortunately, for most the day, I am completely unaware of these other sources of sensory information. I am able to concentrate just on the work in front of me.

For many individuals with an ASD, however, this necessary filtering of unimportant sensory input doesn?t happen. The streaks of light coming through the window blinds may be mesmerizing, while the low hum of the heater may be unbearably irritating. This inability to block out normal ?background? stimuli sometimes produces a state of ?sensory overload? in individuals with an ASD, disrupting their ability to focus and concentrate, which are necessary skills for learning and communicating. The difficulty is not with one specific sense, but with how multiple senses are experienced all at once.

There are a variety of therapies that attempt to help individuals with ASDs by addressing not only these sensory issues, but the impact they have on the brain. Two of the most well known of these are Sensory Integration Therapy and Auditory Integration Therapy.

Children with a range of developmental disorders - including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and autism spectrum disorders - may have those types of symptoms, according to the recommendations published in Pediatrics.

But sensory-related problems don?t tend to show up on their own as isolated issues, Zimmer said.

?There are no studies out there that really show that there?s such a thing as a stand-alone diagnosis of a sensory processing disorder,? she said.

For that reason, the recommendations aimed at pediatricians include not using sensory processing disorder as its own diagnosis, but instead evaluating kids for underlying developmental problems.

Sensory-based Treatment for Adults With Developmental Disabilities

In recent years there has been increased focus on sensory-based and sensory-integrative treatment with adults with developmental disabilities, similar in theory and practice to that for children. (Pfieffer and Kinnealey, 2005) Specific assessments have been developed with the adult population in mind. (e.g., Hanschu and Reisman, 1992)

Adults with profound mental retardation may have problems with severe self-injurious behavior (SIB). In some cases, sensory-based treatment has been found to be effective in reducing this problem. (Reisman, 1992) In other cases, sensory-based treatment has reduced agitation and promoted relaxation in adult clients with developmental disabilities (DD).

In one facility in Minnesota, the success of a sensory-based treatment approach in reducing problem behaviors led to widespread support of the program by the majority of the staff, not just the therapists. (Hanschu, 1998)

In general, sensory-based treatment is most effective when it is done frequently and consistently. (Reisman, 1992) This suggests that frequent access to sensory equipment or modalities is helpful. It is essential as well that all staff be provided education and understand the nature of sensory-based treatment.

They also call for talking to families about the limited evidence supporting therapy focusing on sensory processing.

Roseann Schaaf, an occupational therapist from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, said she agrees there shouldn?t be a separate diagnosis for sensory processing disorder, but said sensory-related treatment can still be a useful part of therapy for kids with other underlying issues.

The recommendation paper ?does not consider that the intervention is individually tailored to each child?s needs,? Schaaf, who has studied sensory problems and their treatment, told Reuters Health in an email.

?Unfortunately, it is likely that pediatricians will interpret this article to mean that occupational therapy using sensory integration is not helpful?when in fact, the evidence is mounting that it is helpful for many children,? she concluded.

After paying up all your unsecured loans with this single loan, you need only concentrate on paying this one loan. The advantage of this is that you may be able to cut down on the interest that you were paying for your unsecured loans. A debt consolidation loan?s interest rate may be lower compared to your unsecured loans especially your credit card debts.

The loans you can take can be a refinance loan which is secured to your home. This type of loan is available if you have home equity and a good credit score. The advantage of getting this loan to pay up your debts and consolidate it all into one is that it will have lower interest rates. This could actually save you from a few hundred dollars to a few thousands in interests. However, the loan is a long term one so you may need to take longer to repay it, possibly between 20 and 30 years.

If you do not relish the idea of taking a loan to settle all of your unsecured loans, there are also other options available. You may want to try debt management services and credit counseling services. These are some of the options that you could consider other than taking a consolidation loan to settle your debts. The above-mentioned methods all have their pros and cons but what you should be looking for is a single method that suits your financial situation.

Polls: Greek's pro-austerity parties gaining

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Four new opinion polls indicate that Greece's June 17 election could produce another hung parliament but that two mainstream parties that favor implementing Greece's bailout programs could be able to form a coalition government this time.

The polls indicate that pro-bailout New Democracy party and anti-bailout Syriza would probably finish first and second again, but that New Democracy would win more seats in parliament than during the May 6 national election, allowing it to team up with Socialist PASOK in a governing coalition.

The polls were published Sunday in the To Vima, Real News, Proto Thema and Eleftheros Typos newspapers.

Three of the polls questioned about 1,000 people and the Eleftheros Typos 1,212. That would give the polls a margin of error of about plus or minus 3 percentage points.

ATLANTA (AP) - Lance Lynn joined Philadelphia's Cole Hamels as the major leagues' first eight-game winners, and the St. Louis Cardinals' extended the Atlanta Braves' longest losing streak in two years to eight games with an 8-2 victory Monday.

Lynn (8-1) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. While he was dominating the Braves, Hamels pitched the Phillies to an 8-4 win at the Mets.

Atlanta is on its worst skid since the Braves lost nine in a row from April 21-29, 2010. The Braves have given up seven runs or more in four straight games.

Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer as a fill-in starter at third base for David Freese, who was given a day off with a mild sprain of his right hand.

Rafael Furcal had three hits, including a homer, and Matt Adams had three hits with three RBIs for St. Louis.

Marc Rzepczynski and Eduardo Sanchez followed Lynn with hitless relief, completing a five-hitter.

Atlanta's Tommy Hanson (5-4) gave up six runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings. He left the bases loaded in the first and stranded a runner on third base in the second, then fell behind 4-0 in the third.

A light show for the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th birthday

The Golden Gate Bridge is getting a little sparkle for its 75th birthday.

On Sunday, remotely operated mirrors on top of the bridge's towers began flashing narrow beams of reflected sunlight all around the San Francisco Bay in an installation that marries art and science.

"We love our view of the bridge. We've always wanted to enhance it with a little sparkle," said astrophysicist John Vallerga, whose offices at UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory in the Berkeley Hills overlook the bay.

Members of the public will eventually be able to arrange their own brief performance by going to the installation's website and scheduling a time and place for the beam to shine.

Part of the bridge's yearlong birthday celebration, the project, called Solar Beacon, will remain in place until Aug. 30. But the bridge, which opened on May 27, 1937, actually marked it 75th anniversary Sunday.

Bridge workers Friday installed one of two sets of mirrors, or heliostats, atop each of the bridge's two 746-foot towers. The heliostats, about two feet across, are swiveled and tilted by motors directed by cellphone commands.

"It's art in progress. It's never been done before, and we don't know what it's going to look like," said Vallerga, who is executing the project with a group of volunteers.

Normally he builds instruments for astronomical spacecraft, including ones bound for Pluto and Jupiter. That work, he added, is "very utilitarian. It's not often we can appreciate its artistic value. This is a little bit different."

The heliostat concept originated in 2005 when Vallerga and colleague Pat Jelinsky approached an artist-in-residence at the space lab, Liliane Lijn of London. They came up with an idea for prism heliostats that would convert sunlight into refracted rainbow colors beamed from a hilltop.

They were eyeing Los Angeles, either in the Hollywood Hills or near the Griffith Observatory, as a location. Unable to drum up enough local support, they are now planning their solar hill for a mountain ridge in France.

But they haven't forgotten L.A. "I think it would be gorgeous down there," Vallerga said.
