Have you ever experienced one of those days/weeks/months where all that could go wrong did? What about one of those days you just didn?t feel quite like yourself? You may be stressed and tired and thinking you just may lose yourself. After a full work week of satisfying random people?s needs, you return home and meet the needs of those you love. Should make it easier, right?
Well, as you are providing for everyone else are you starting to question, ?Is this really what I signed up for?? Coming home to clean up after little people and in some cases big people too has its challenges. Keeping the house spotless, preparing meals and assisting with homework (to name a few) leaves little enjoyment remaining for you.
Recognizing motherhood isn?t for everyone, there is a certain tenacity a mom must have. Though many have been given the opportunity, not everyone has fully accepted the complete responsibility.
In my day job I work with adults looking to return to the workforce. During one of the training classes a client mentioned she had absolutely no work history, never having a real job. My first question, ?Are you a mom; do you work at home?? After she replied yes, I informed her right away how much work history she truly had.
Here?s what being a mom says about us as women: We can multi-task. Juggling the schedules of children is no easy task. We have to consistently keep track of who needs to be where at any given time. We must be organized, because not only do we have to demonstrate organization daily (knowing where that other shoe is when it?s time to leave is crucial) but because we also have to teach it to our children.
Which brings me to our next gift, the gift of teaching. It?s the most important role we have as a mother. We are responsible for teaching these little people everything we know to ensure they are happy, safe and successful. Moms must impart wisdom into children, even sometimes when we are still learning ourselves. We are not only the first but the most influential life instructor they will ever have. This position should never be taken lightly. With everything we do we are teaching. Our actions and reactions are always on display. It might seem a bit overwhelming, but there is an overall satisfaction one feels as a result of motherhood.
When I am experiencing a week like the one mentioned above, I am comforted as I consider the joys that come along with my most important role. The benefits of motherhood far outweigh the stress and occasional exhaustion. I remind myself motherhood was a choice. I would rather come home to clean up after little people (and that big person too) than to come home and clean up after only myself. What?s so great about being a mom for me is the love. As a child, I always thought no one could ever love me the way my mom loved me. Then I had my own children and they never even have to speak the words. The love they have exudes from the way they look at me, speak to me, hug and kiss me. There is no greater joy than having someone who loves me no matter what.
