Mayor: Rise in dengue cases alarming

Monday, June 11, 2012

ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the rise in dengue fever cases in the city is ?seriously alarming? despite interventions the City Government are implementing in the villages.

He said the battle against dengue must be spearheaded by village residents themselves in a massive clean-up program, to eradicate breeding grounds of the disease-carrying mosquitoes.

The mayor also said leptospirosis cases, which are caused by wastes of rats, are also on the rise.

He noted the lax attitude of the village officials in the clean-up drive as one of the reasons in the rise of these cases.

City Health Officer Dr. Urminico Baronda reported seven deaths and 529 registered cases for the first five months ? January to May this year ? due to dengue, as compared to eight deaths and 425 cases for 12 months in 2011.

There are 22 deaths and 1,807 deaths in 2010.

Mabilog said spraying with granular chemicals donated by a group of Filipino-Chinese businessmen based in Manila is ongoing in schools and other public places. (Lydia C. Pendon)
