Western names new women's tennis coach

Shawn Stillman has been named the head women's tennis coach at his alma mater Western Connecticut State University.

Stillman, a 1994 Western graduate, was a member of the Colonials' men's tennis program from 1990 to 1993. During his career, under the tutelage of coach George McLean, Western went 20-23 and he was an all-league selection in 1993 as the Colonials' top singles player.

Stillman is currently the Director of Neighborhood Assistance for the City of Danbury and has 23 years experience teaching and coaching tennis in the Danbury area.

He has been the Assistant Tennis Professional at Ridgewood Country Club, managed club operations at Beaver Brook Tennis Club for eight years and was Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Redding for more than three years.

Stillman takes over a program that has won one match over the past two seasons.

"My objective is to get tennis players back on the court here at Western," stressed Stillman. "When I get the interest back, I will get this program back on track and we will be competitive again."

In 2010, the Colonials went 13-1, won the Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and made the program's first appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament.
