Have a New Year's Eve Party at Home With Your Family

New Year?s Eve is typically a time for the best parties of the year, and restaurants and nightclubs are usually booked months in advance. If you?re looking for something quieter and more personal for this New Year?s Eve, why not consider a smaller party at home with your family? You can make it very festive and enjoyable but not overwhelming if you put some thought and effort into it and plan ahead.

First, make a manageable guest list. This might be your siblings or a few in-laws or just your closest friends, and their children. Don?t feel obligated to hostess everyone in the family or invite all your friends; keep it small so it?s manageable.

Decorate your home for New Year?s Eve so it?s enjoyable for guests. You don?t need to go overboard with decorations; hang some metallic circles from the ceiling and use a metallic gold or silver tablecloth for your dining room table. Purchase some small party items for your family and invitees, such as noisemakers and headpieces or beads they can wear. These few simple touches will keep things fun.

Prepare a simple spread for your guests. A fondue pot is a great choice for a group; you can use different items for dipping with your fondue pot, such as various breads or vegetables. You can have a separate fondue pot with melted chocolate for dipping fruit, pretzels, or bits of cake. Simple finger sandwiches and some chips, as well as some punch as a selection of soda can round out your menu.

It?s still good to plan some activities for New Year?s Eve even with a small group or just family. Dig out all your board games or invest in some new ones for the party. Rediscover games you haven?t played for years, even children?s games or classic games like Clue or Junior Monopoly. You might play a card game that the kids can play, like Uno. Older children may play euchre or canasta or even a simple poker. You can also play charades or rent movies that everyone in the family will love.

Once it?s time to start counting down to midnight, it?s good to make it a special moment. If possible, move the family outside so you can see any fireworks displays that might be set off. Have your noisemakers handy and let the kids make noise with toy instruments like tambourines or shakers. Wrap up the party soon after so it doesn?t drag on into the middle of the night. A simple party like this can be a great way to usher in the new year and can be just as enjoyable as a loud party with strangers.
