There are quite a few different teaching certification categories available in Arizona. There are ten different certifications available in all. If someone is interested in teaching Kindergarten they would want to get the Elementary or Early childhood certification. For a job in a junior high or high school one would look toward the Secondary certification.
Besides the regular certifications there are specialized ones that can be gained through the Arizona Board of Education. Certifications in Athletic Coaching are available for those who have studied Physical Education. Art students can obtain their certification in Arts Education. There are also JROTC, Substitute teaching and Foreign Language certifications.
When one is ready to apply for certification the process must be started by applying for an IVP Fingerprint Card. This Card is issued by the state Department of Public Safety. An application with correct fees and official transcripts must also be submitted to the Arizona Department of Education Certification Unit. Reading and following the instructions in the application packet are a must. Missing information can cause significant delays and in some cases cause the application to be thrown out.
Applicants that are transferring from another state need to check on the reciprocity agreements Arizona has currently. Although they do have them with many states in regards to teaching certifications, they do not have them with all. The State Board of Education has all the information on file in regards to the certification programs, fingerprinting programs and which information is available to transfer over.
